How To Find Your Target Audience

When you start your blog you are probably the only person to read it. Then you may share it with close family and friends and find the odd spike from somewhere in Japan – and let’s be honest, we all got really excited when 10 people may have visited our blog. You join in linkys and share your posts on social media in the hope that someone somewhere would read it and like it, hopefully sharing it on again. As much as we all write for ourselves, for the joy of writing, we also want our posts to resonate with others don’t we?

How to find your blog's target audience

So who reads your posts? Your mum? Your friends? Other bloggers? Is that enough for you? If you want your blog to gain momentum and do well then you need to determine who your ideal reader is. Who is it that really connects with your blog? Do you cater your posts to them?

I recently went to BlogStock and learned so much in such a short space of time. One of the real pearls of wisdom I came home with was the fact that YOU are your ideal reader. Not the you sitting there right now but the you of a few months ago. When you think about it, it totally makes sense!

Let’s think about it…

Why do you read blogs?

  • Maybe you read parenting blogs, searching for help and inspiration for your own children. You want to look to other more experienced parents so you can try out their ideas, learn from their mistakes.
  • Perhaps you read blogs that share days out. You want to look at reviews of various places to see whether you want to visit that castle or pay money for that park.
  • Maybe you like bloggers that share their successes so you can aspire to reach their level and mimic certain qualities of their blog.

Whatever the reason, you are always looking at blogs and bloggers who have been there and done that. You look to them for ideas and inspiration in whatever category they write about and they help you to improve yourself and broaden your mind. Those bloggers are where you are aiming to be, whether that be as a parent,a partner or a blogger.

So why do people read your blog?

What is it that people look to you for? What are you good at? If you want to find out who your ideal reader is then you need to think about where you are now and where you have come from over the last couple of months or so.

  • Maybe you have been through something traumatic, sharing your experience may help someone who is just at the beginning of that journey.
  • Maybe you have had a real success at this parenting malarkey, found the secret to a great nights sleep. Share that knowledge and help others just like you!
  • Maybe you make the most scrumptious meals or are a dab hand at crafting. People find you through Pinterest as they want to have a go themselves!

Whatever it is, people look to you as someone who is that little way ahead of them, someone to look up to and be inspired by when they they need someone to turn to. So be proud of your blog and know that while you are looking to others, there are others that look to you.

So who were you, that is who you need to write for now!

Great philosophy and once it’s been pointed out, you realise the truth of it too. I still remember the first time a post hit double viewing figures, you would think I had just won a Nobel prize lol! #TheList

This is brilliant! I’ve been feeling a bit blog disheartened this week. I think I’ve forgotten to write the posts that I want and have got into a routine of habit – writing to a weekly schedule of similar topics. I definitely need to start writing for me and from my strengths. Great post as always. xx #thslist

We all get those days. Write for you, do what makes you happy and like-minded people WILL find you x

You’re absolutely right. I’m trying to build my following at the moment but finding it tricky to find others in the same situation as me – I’ll keep searching! Jules x

The blogs I read aren’t anything like my own blog and don’t cover the same subjects. I once got told by a PR to include photos of my children as ‘that’s want people like to see’ but I found that really creepy. I guess I’ll have to miss out on those types of readers!

The reason people come to your blog won’t be the same reason as you go to another. You just have to think the people who are reading yours come to you because they like you- so be you and you will be fine! x

That’s a really great way to look at it. I’ve been writing about what interests me & things we get up to & what interests me. Sometimes I wonder if that’s the right way to go or if I should be thinking about what people want read – this is reassuring 🙂 #TheList x

You are doing an awesome job Becky, the things that resonate with others are those that you are passionate about. Keep doing what you are doing! x

I don’t read particular blogs, i read a blog if the title interests me or if i need blogging tips i tend to go to certain blogs for help. Perhaps that’s why i only have a small blog because i do not blog about anyting specific #TheList

I don’t think specifics matter so much, people connect with people for all sorts of reasons. There may be a mum out there with the same aged children as you who just loves to hear about your week- write for her and other like her. x

I’m still working out who my audience is and I really do not know! It takes time to figure out…im just being me and writing about my experiences and slowly people are finding me. i need to think more about this!

I completely agree. Great advice for blogs starting out but something for all bloggers who have been around a while too. Always love discovering new blogs that catch my eye with great writing, sometimes beautiful pictures or even present a lifestyle that appeals. Writing for you is really the key and being proud about your posts.

    A great post Katy.

I got into a habit of trying to write about a topical parenting issue or a post for a linky.

I now write only when something moves me to write. I’ve a few drafts I’ve started and a list of post topics. So hopefully come the new year I can write regular decent posts.
Thanks for all the great tips.

Thanks for the advice. I’m only a month into my blog journey so going through everything you’ve just mentioned. It’s a little harder than I expected but will stick with it !
