Deciding a Blog Name

So you’ve decided to start a blog. Hurrah! But what are you going to call it?! Argh! This is potentially one of the really tricky bits of starting a blog, coming up with a name that perfectly represents all that you hope to achieve and embody with your blog in the future. No pressure, right? Well, fear not as we have some top ideas for developing a blog name that you’ll love!

What is your blog about?

Kind of obvious but what is your blog going to be about? It is often worth giving people an idea of what it’s about in the title. For example, both Aby and I have ‘mum’ in the title, You Baby Me Mummy and Mums’ Days, so it’s pretty obvious what our blogs are going to be about. You do have to be sure you will always talk about that particular niche though!

Is your blog about you? Then perhaps use your mane in the title, such as Oh Joy, A cup of Jo or our very own What Katy Said!

If you want to build your personal brand, you might want to use your whole name, such as James Altucher, however it might be hard to get your name as a URL – some people say you should buy your own URL anyway, just in case!

If you’re not fully sure what you’ll  be blogging about and you want to leave it more open, then wordplay can be a fun way to choose a theme but allude to more. For example, Design Sponge is about design…but maybe more? It is about more by the way!

Developing Ideas

Do a mind map – write my blog in the middle of a bubble and write down everything you’d like to talk about (don’t get too specific!), feelings and values you’d like to embody, and anything else related to your blog around the outside. Certain words will emerge or make you think of other, similar words, that could form part of the name.

Use Google Adwords – if you know the niche you want to blog in, it might be worth searching on google adwords to see what people are searching for in that area. Chances are if they are looking for it on google, they would love your blog, so this might give you the perfect name and makes it easier for them to find you!

Invent a word, or create a version of a word that doesn’t exist, or even merge two words together that describe what you will be writing about!

The Don’ts

Don’t be too specific – You might want to blog about sun glasses but in the future this might develop into an interest for all headwear!

Don’t go for a really long name – this increases the likelihood of spelling mistakes, people getting bored halfway through typing it or struggling to remember the name.

Checking your blog name

Is the URL available? I had a great idea for a blog called Amazon but the URL was already gone. Dad joke.

Is the twitter handle available? If there is an existing, very popular person already using that handle, even if an alternative is available, you might want to think twice.

Do your friends like it? There’s a chance that your mates might not get it and it still could be the next big thing, so it’s important to go with your gut, but if a whole bunch of your friends say it reminds them of sick, unless your blogging about vomit, you might want to rethink it. Equally check they can a) pronounce it and b) spell it!

Once you’ve got all that covered, you’re ready! So what did you come up with?

Ooh what a great post! 🙂

I chose Hello Beautiful Bear as it’s one of the first things I said to my daughter when she was born. ‘Beautiful Bear’ has since been been her nickname and we’ve even got a little song that we sing to her based on her name XX

Helpful tips. I didn’t really think to give that much thought to the importance of picking the right name (I have been known to agonise more over pub quiz team names, in fact) but, fortunately, I am happy with mine & it does suit my blog topic! If I ever start a second blog though, I will make sure I think through name implications properly, rather than just hoping to get lucky! #TheList

These are great tips. Choosing a name for something you’ve not yet created is such a hard thing! Mind changed a few times in the early days, not much, same premise but words shuffled etc. It’s good that we have a tagline to play with too. Naming your blog is a bit like naming your child, you’re stuck with it, so choose wisely! LOL

It was hard choosing a name for my blog, and I had never even read a blog before I started blogging, that’s right not one, I just went for it, now I read lots including you lovely ladies. I liked lots of names but they were all taken. In the end my daughter helped me choose Reflections From Me, and it suits what I write about, as at the end of the day it is my thoughts and feelings that I blog about whether that’s about mummy stuff or advice it all comes from me. Thanks for a great blog post! #the list

Haha mine is a bit ridiculous – Toilets aren’t for Turtles! It started off as Please don’t put the turtle in the toilet but that was just waaaaay too long!. Toilets aren’t for Turtles seems to intrigue people, but it’s certainly not clear what kind of blog it is just by the name.

These are great pointers! I ran all my blog title ideas by one of my closest friends before I decided on one. It was super HARD! I love my title though! I’m not sure what it is about it but I just love it! Thanks for those ideas! #TheList

Choosing a blog name was so hard but when I had the idea for Gym Bunny Mummy I knew I was onto a winner for me as it incorporated my two loves, being a mum & going to the gym. However since I’ve been going to events etc I’ve realised it is a little bit of a tongue twister for some people! 🙂 #TheList

Great points, lovelies. I took ages to think up my blog name – ones I’d thought of originally had already been taken, or were a bit obscure – then Headspace Perspective came to me in a flash of inspiration. My blog is my headspace, a place for a different perspective on things – and doesn’t limit me to a particular phase in my life, or niche. Worth taking the time to make sure it’s right for you before taking the plunge xx #TheList

Great post and great advice, I changed my blog name when I moved to selfhosted as I realised my old name wouldn’t be relevant for very long, I am really happy with the name I picked but it took me ages to think of it!

These are really great tips! It’s so hard choosing a name, especially when you are not sure what you are going to blog about.
I picked Little Fish, because I knew I wanted to blog about babies and kids, but also wanted to leave it open to be able to blog about other things in the future. It also reflects how I feel as a ‘little fish in a big ocean!’ but my blog is my space for me to have my voice heard. I also love the ocean and travel so it reflects that about me too.
I do sometimes wonder if I picked a good name though as it isn’t obvious what the blog is about from the name. That being said I think your tips about a name being memorable/available etc are just as important. I have lots of things I want to do with and improve on my blog, but overall I am happy with the name!

It took me quite a while to think of the name for my blog. I brainstormed a lot and wrote down lots of potentials. They were ok, had it narrowed to to several choices, a few which I found were already taken! Then one day as I was washing the dishes & listening to the radio an advertisement must have said something to spark the idea. As soon as the name popped into my head I knew it was perfect! It embodied everything that I hope my blog will be! Then I checked the URL and playitforward was already taken so I had to add the “parents” to the end which just made it even more perfect!
Once you finally think up the “name” of what you want your blog to be called, you just get that feeling & know it’s “the one”!

Some super advice, I brainstormed lots of ideas relating to my interests and was looking for something that reflected these but wasn’t too specific. Sarah Kate is me (although my middle named is Catherine really) and making is what I do (crafting, baking and more) xx

A few years ago when I was writing my homeschooling blog Navigating By Joy I registered the domain name Laugh, Love, Learn. I intended to write about unschooling (I never did) but when I decided to start a new blog this year about my quirky family and overexcitabilities, I thought I might as well use it. It’s a terrible name in that I can never remember which order the words come in (so how will anyone else?!😂) but on the other hand I love all the words and the whole sentiment so I decided to stick with it. I’ll just have to rely on people subscribing to me if they ever want to find me again. 😀

I spent so long thinking about a blog name and just took the step and decided one day! I’m almost one year old at Black & White Insider, but am thinking of rebranding. Always so many options! xx
