Social Media Headers: A Size Guide

When you set up your blog there is so much work that needs to be done behind the scenes. One of those things is creating a fabulous blog header to show everyone what you are about! If you have read last week’s post about how to choose a blog design for your blog you will know the importance of a great header.

social media guide

Your header is your main branding, that along with your profile picture will be what everyone recognises and associates with you and your blog. You need to make sure people can see straight away what your blog is about by the name of your blog, the graphics if you use them and the tagline supporting your branding. Of course it isn’t necessary to have a tagline if your name gives the game away but if like Katy you have a more general name for your blog then you need a tagline to help people ‘get it’.

Once you have a design for your blog you need to make sure that the design is consistent across all platforms. This will make sure people recognise you and your account immediately- there is nothing worse than inconsistency! Now, the internet is a little vague and you have to do a bit of digging to find out the different dimensions for different platforms. So, we thought it would be great to have all of the dimensions in one place so you know exactly what size you need for each one!

Your Blog

This is often dictated by the theme you are running or personal preference, a minimum would be 900 x 150 but you can go as wide as your theme allows- I have seen some set to 1000 x 500. Many people say you shouldn’t have your header taking up all of your ‘above the fold’ space but it is your blog and your rules so do what suits you!

Facebook

When you design your header for Facebook you need to bear in mind that your profile picture and the ‘like’ button etc will cover up some of the design. You may wish to align it slightly to the right to accommodate this.

Twitter

As with Facebook, you need to accommodate your profile picture when designing the header. The profile picture overlaps the header and the space below.

Google Plus

Again some re-jigging of the header to account for the centralised placement of the profile picture.

YouTube

This is a frustrating one and one you may have to play around with to suit what you want. The guidelines they give are really strange and often the header stretches to look as though it is zoomed in a lot! So annoying!! The trick is to use their guidelines and then place your header design just above middle- once it is uploaded it will fill the whole space (the blank space around is invisible on desktops and mobiles).

So there we have it, a quick guide to the different header sizes you will need for the various platforms associated with your blog.
